Ubiquiti UniFi Ecosystem: Why NexaIT Uses It

NexaIT leverages Ubiquiti UniFi in some networking projects because the platform combines the management of compatible gateways, switches and access points. However, this is not the default choice without analysis. First, we determine the requirements, and then we compare the product capabilities, support model and maintenance cost.

Shared console

UniFi Network allows you to configure and observe multiple network elements in one interface. This makes it easier to standardise names, VLANs, Wi-Fi policies, and how devices are updated.

However, a common console does not mean that it can see every element of the infrastructure. Third-party devices, cabling, power, carrier connections, and client systems require separate tools or procedures. The dashboard is an administrative aid, not a complete picture of the entire environment.

Licensing model

The basic functions of the UniFi Network application are not billed as a mandatory, recurring licence for each managed device. This can simplify costing compared to platforms where console operation depends on an active subscription.

This does not mean that the entire ecosystem is free or that conditions will never change. Some services and features may be billed separately. The company still incurs the cost of hardware, implementation, administration, updates, configuration copies, spare parts and support. Before purchasing, we check the manufacturer's current conditions for a specific set.

Wide selection of devices

The UniFi family includes devices with different numbers of ports, bandwidth, PoE budget and Wi-Fi standard. This allows you to build coherent installations in small offices and more complex facilities.

A wide catalogue does not replace calculations. When selecting a switch, we check the number of ports, power budget, bandwidth of upstream connections and room for expansion. When selecting a gateway, we take into account the performance with the necessary security features enabled, not just the maximum value from the table.

Wi-Fi requires a project

Selection of access points based on the declared range or area alone is insufficient. Walls, ceilings, shelves, distractions and client devices all affect the result.

Depending on the facility, we prepare a project based on documentation, perform a site inspection or radio measurements. Integration with other families UniFi

The same ecosystem also covers other areas, including video surveillance and access control. This may reduce the number of administration panels, but increases dependence on a single manufacturer.

Before connecting several systems, we check the requirements for retention, permissions, data export, redundancy and support. A common interface is not a sufficient reason to choose a product if its features do not meet business or regulatory requirements.

What we value in maintenance

In repeated implementations, knowledge of the platform and the ability to use consistent procedures provide value. The team can prepare configuration, update, backup and documentation standards for similar environments.

However, we do not update all devices without a risk assessment just because the console provides one button. Changes should have a service window, a copy of the configuration, a test and the ability to roll back.

When we choose another solution

Another platform may be better if the customer requires:

• specific manufacturer support contract and guaranteed replacement time;
• operator functions or advanced routing not available on the selected model;
• specific certificates or compliance lists;
• integration with existing enterprise standard;
• independent network separation, monitoring and access control;
• functions that the manufacturer does not support on the required scale.

The cost of migration is also important. Working, supported infrastructure from another manufacturer should not be replaced solely to unify the logo.

Summary

UniFi is one of the platforms we know well and can maintain. We choose it when the shared management, device capabilities and cost model meet the customer's requirements. Every project still requires correct wiring, segmentation, measurement and maintenance procedures.
